Lord, let her listen with favor. “I’ll not only be touring Texas, but Oklahoma and Arkansas too. It’s not Paris. It’s not even New York City. But God is opening doors.” He searched her face for some hint of her reaction.

She looked as dazed, stunned, as she had when she first spotted him in the parlor. Had he just imagined the thrill that passed between them when he kissed her hands? Dare he hope she cared for him in the same way he cared for her? Mr. Ames thought so.

What was he going to say next? Oh yes. “But one thing is lacking from my plans. I want something extra for the revival services. Something—or should I say someone—who will draw people in, the way Ira Sankey and his music does for Dwight L. Moody. And I believe God has shown me the perfect answer.”

A wild light appeared in Lucy’s eyes, hinting at joy and hope she did not attempt to conceal.

“That’s right. I want you, Lucy. You’re not only the best entertainer I have ever seen; you have a heart wholly committed to the Lord, and a gift for evangelism.” I sound like I’m recommending her for a job. “The truth is, I love you, Lucy. I have for months. But I couldn’t ask you to leave the major’s show. Not when I saw how God used you.”

“You…love…me?” Nothing else he said had registered.

“I love you, Miss Lucy Ames.” He dropped to one knee and once again lifted her hand to his lips. “Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”

“Oh yes, yes, yes! Today and always, Christmas and the Fourth of July and every day in between. Wherever God leads us…together.” She lifted him to his feet.

Gordon maneuvered Lucy under the mistletoe and claimed a kiss. When their lips parted, he found his voice again. “God led our two searching souls together. He’s given me the best Christmas present since the birth of our Savior.” He chuckled as he slid a ring made of intricate sterling silver scrollwork adorned by a single luminous pearl on Lucy’s finger. “With a God like that, who knows what tomorrow will bring?”

“I don’t care.” Lucy let the ring sparkle in the firelight. “As long as I’m with you.”
